Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies (BA ELS) program of the Isabela
State University Cauayan City Campus
is tasked to develop professional graduates who are
competent, efficient, and would contribute to the development of the community through
providing comprehensive knowledge of the English language – its origin, growth and
development, structures and use; enhancing competencies in the use of the English language in
real-world contexts; and presenting appropriate strategies of language use through a heightened
awareness of how English works in different situations in the Philippines and in Asia and the rest
of the world. It covers important areas of study including History of the English Language, English
Phonology and Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, English Discourse, Computer-Mediated
Communication, Stylistics, Language of Literary Text, Language of Non-Literary Text, and
Language Research.
In line with the vision of the University to be towards development of a leading, vibrant and
comprehensive Research University locally and globally, the BA English Language Studies
curriculum shall prepare future ELS professionals of this country to become competent who are
imbued with the needed skills and competencies in their chosen field of specializations
responsive to the challenges of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
The Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies Program (BAELS) is a four-year degree
program designed to equipped students with effective use of the English language to realize
specific goals. Career opportunities include academic and scholarly work such as teaching and
research, business and industry jobs such as public relations, advertisements and documentation
and media and publishing such as writing, translating, and editing, and government and
diplomatic services.
Under the new curriculum, learners pursuing this program complete 152 units of study, consisting
of a 45 units core courses and 107 units of course work inclusive of English and other major and
cognate courses, general education (GE), Physical Education, and NSTP.
The program has been granted Level III Reaccredited Status by the Accrediting Agency
of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP). It welcomes all interested
students from any senior high school track who pass the ISU College Admission Test.

Program Objectives

  1. Display commendable values of nationalism, patriotism and gender development
    principles in multicultural settings.
  2. Manifest effective entrepreneurial, leadership, environmental, and information technology
    skills in diverse social, cultural, academic, and professional settings.
  3. Articulate a comprehensive and contextualized view of the English language system for
    literacy development and critical/creative thinking.
  4. Communicate in English (both oral and written) fluently, accurately, and creatively in
    diverse social, cultural, academic, and professional settings.
  5. Engage in English language research and extension relevant to the school and workplace
    setting.
  6. Apply English communication skills using knowledge of best practices in their chosen
    tracks.
  7. Produce well-written texts for various academic and professional purposes.
